Oral Tumors / Oncologic Surgery

Oral tumors constitute about 6% of the overall incidence of cancer in dogs and cats. The most important thing to know about oral tumors is that early detection is key to successful treatment. This is one of the reasons why regular oral examinations are extremely important. The incidence of oral cancer increases with age therefore routine oral exams are a necessary part of a complete physical exam as your dog or cat ages.

An oral mass requires a biopsy for definitive diagnosis. Although a confident clinical impression can be obtained from an examination, x-rays, and cone beam CT, a final diagnosis requires a biopsy and evaluation by a veterinary pathologist. At VDOSNT, we partner with pathologists who specialize in oral diseases in dogs and cats.

Once we have determined the type of tumor, we can make recommendations regarding surgery. Some surgeries are minor, and may require removing a tooth along with the bone and soft tissues surrounding it. Other tumors can be large and require removing a significant portion of the jaw. We have extensive experience with oncologic surgery. We will discuss your options and help you determine the best plan for you and your pet.
